Things to Do at Cross Mountain Park
- Walk your dog
- Hike to the top
- Hike short nature trails
Cross Mountain Park is open all day, and it’s dog friendly. We hiked to the top of the hill with our dog and found the best view in Fredericksburg. The trail is made entirely of rocks and wraps around the hill. A couple areas are steep and may be moderately difficult. However, hiking Cross Mountain is quick due to the surroundings.
The recorded elevation of Cross Mountain is approximately 1,950 feet. Although, this height may include the cross at the top of the hill. The peak is only about 100 feet above the surrounding area in Fredericksburg. In comparison, Enchanted Rock is slightly lower, but is over 400 feet above its surroundings. This makes Enchanted Rock a much more strenuous climb.
Hiking Cross Mountain
The trail is unmarked at Cross Mountain Park, and the distance has not been recorded. If you hike up, down and around the nature trails, you may reach a distance of one mile. The potential hiking distance at this park is low, but the reward is high.
The park was still being updated during our visit. There is a restroom and picnic table near the trailhead, but no other amenities. At the peak there is a bench and a giant cross. The first settlers of Fredericksburg did find one at the top, but the current cross is not the original. Additionally, we found swarms of butterflies at the top of the hill. One remained still long enough to capture it in the foreground of a photo.
What will you see at the top of Cross Mountain? The only way to find out is to climb the hill yourself. There are a lot of great things to do in Fredericksburg, and hiking Cross Mountain Park is one of them.
